Jefferson County's Lauren Collins Brings Home the Gold!

In June 2011, over 50 students travelled to the National History Day competition in College Park, Maryland as "Team Tennessee".   After a week of competition and fun, Tennessee came away with its first gold medal. Jefferson County 8th grader Lauren Collins (White Pine Elementary) placed first in the Junior Individual Documentary catagory with a project that chronicles the debate on eminent domain and how it has impacted her family over the generations.  Click here to read more about Lauren's experience and project.

Lauren competed first at the East Tennessee History Day (ETHD) district competition sponsored by the East Tennessee Historical Society and University of Tennessee Department of History.  ETHD winners are eligible to compete at the Tennessee History Day (THD) competition in Nashville sponosred by the Tennessee Historical Society.  THD is the state afilliate of the National History Day program headquartered at the University of Maryland.  Please contact Lisa Oakley at ETHS (oakley@eastTNhistory.org) or state coordinator Kelly Wilkerson (kellyw@tennesseehistory.org) if you would like more information on the National History Day program.
