A Knoxville Heritage: Tennessee Marble | A Brown Bag Lecture by Don Byerly

@ East Tennessee History Center
Where:
East Tennessee History Center Bilo Nelson Auditorium
When:
Thursday, April 20, 2017 - 12:00pm to 1:00pm

Few industries have had as historic and enduring effect on architecture across our nation as the marble industry of East Tennessee. Tennessee Marble, though not as steeped in antiquity as many European stones, has been quarried continuously in East Tennessee for lime and dimension stone since colonial times. Because it has national and international identity and the requisite attributes, Tennessee Marble is being nominated for recognition as a “Global Heritage Stone Resource.” Tennessee Marble continues to be popular with architects and builders for its structural and decorative qualities and with sculptors for its artistic inspiration. Don Byerly is professor emeritus of geology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, a founding member of Tennessee Earth Science Teachers, and the recipient of several awards.

The program is sponsored by Harriet Z. Albers Memorial and is and free and open to the public. The lecture will begin at noon at the East Tennessee History Center, 601 S. Gay Street, Knoxville. Guests are invited to bring a “Brown Bag” lunch and enjoy the lecture. Soft drinks will be available. For more information on the lecture, exhibitions, or museum hours, call 865-215-8824.
