Front Porch to the Region's History

Geography defines East Tennessee as a land of mountains and valleys and with a history and heritage apart from the rest of the state. The East Tennessee Historical Society recognizes this distinctiveness with programs and exhibitions uniquely tailored to the region. Our educational mission is to engage the public with the message that history is important.

This Day In East Tennessee History

  • August 18, 1873

Born on this day in 1873, May Cravath Wharton moved to Cumberland County in April 1917.  Wharton taught health and served as Pleasant Hill Academy’s physician to staff and students.  Her last project at Pleasant Hill was the formation of the May Cravath Wharton Nursing Home in 1957, a retirement community with homes and apartments.

  • August 18, 1920

On this day in 1920, Harry T. Burn, state representative from McMinn County, cast the deciding vote in favor of the 19th Amendment, making Tennessee the "Perfect 36th" vote needed to ratify woman’s suffrage as a constitutional ammendment.
